I am Dr. Angela Chamorro, Specialist in Aesthetic Medicine and Hair Surgery. Active member of SEME and SERECAP.

One of my main objectives is to keep you up to date with all the treatments that can bring positive results for the appearance and health of your skin.

Below I will detail all the information about this wonderful treatment, skin support threads or tension threads.

The technique of tensioning threads is one of the most recent findings and one that has had the greatest impact in the world of aesthetic medicine; thanks to the fast, lasting and effective results it produces.

What is the technique of tension threads?

The technique of tensioning threads, also called the technique of magic threads or skin support, is one of the most recent techniques in advanced aesthetic medicine.

The procedure was originally born in Japan, as a very little intrusive process that allows healing internal injuries that any part of the body could have. However, over time it has been worked on by the branch of aesthetic medicine.

In this way, the technique of dermosustentation threads has been acquiring functionalities that improve the appearance of the skin, and is currently one of the most effective procedures for the non-surgical removal of wrinkles, expression lines and facial flaccidity.

The very general procedure consists of applying in the area to be worked, by means of very small and fine needles, different types of filaments that have a thickness similar to that of a hair, for this reason they are given the name «threads».

Dermosupport threads: safe and biocompatible

The filaments or threads are biocompatible and do not cause any type of allergy, which results in very few or no adverse effects.

Besides, they act inside the dermis with a double effect: tighten the area to treat, because after the placement by means of the needles they are fixed in the area giving it firmness; and stimulate skin rejuvenation, because our immune system will take the threads as a foreign body and will try to eliminate them, which will cause an «extra» production of collagen.

The most commonly used material for carrying out this procedure is usually polydioxanone. A medical material of much research, and that is usually used even in heart surgeries, with which you will not suffer any type of allergy or inconvenience due to the reabsorption capacities that the body has on it.

The main objective of this treatment is to help both men and women who are beginning to see changes in their skin, such as the fine wrinkles that appear in the early stages of aging, to treat these imperfections without having to go through a long process such as derived from plastic surgery.

To obtain better results, this treatment is often complemented with another type of collagen inducers.

Where can the skin support threads be placed?

The area of the body in which this procedure is most often used is the face, where the threads will work to lift the eyebrows and cheekbones, the disappearance of sagging skin on the neck, the improvement of the appearance of expression lines, among many other things.

However, skin support threads can also be used to treat flaccidity in other parts of the body other than the face, such as arms, legs or buttocks, and can be very effective.

TYPES OF DERMAL SUPPORT THREADS

Depending on the area to be treated and the objectives sought, we can use three types of threads:

  • Serrated or spiculated: they are the thickest type of tension threads, and thanks to their denture-like shape, they provide greater tension and greater grip that will give the skin a firmer appearance.
  • Monofilament: it is the finest tensor thread of all, since it is made up of a single strand. It is mainly used to stress the jaw and chin area.
  • Multifilament: they are made up of several strands, with a thickness less than that of the serrated threads but greater than that of the monofilament threads.

We will be able to see part of the results of this treatment immediately after the completion of the procedure, but it will not be until three months later that we will see the final result on our skin.

And as for the duration, although our own body will absorb the threads between six or eight months after the treatment, the results will remain visible up to a year and a half later.

What is the specific technique procedure for skin support threads?

  • Clinical study of the patient’s needs: first of all, a professional must attend the patient in consultation, to discuss the objectives and needs that he has. In this way, the best way to apply the technique will be found, the area will be evaluated and the material to be used will be decided.
  • Cleaning and disinfection: once the treatment has begun, the area to be worked on must undergo a cleaning and disinfection phase that will allow the professional to work in the best conditions, and will avoid annoying inconveniences related to infections or skin irritations for the patient.
  • Anesthetic cream: in some cases and as the professional sees fit, an anesthetic cream will be applied to the patient. The sensation will simulate coldness on the skin, followed by numbness to the skin until the area is completely numb.
  • Placement of the threads: once the necessary measures have been taken, the professional may proceed to inject the patient with the tension threads in the area to be treated. This procedure will not take more than 30 minutes.

What care should I take into account after the procedure?

There are some precautions that patients should take into account after the completion of the procedure, to avoid any type of discomfort and to take care of the treatment and obtain better results that we will detail below:

  • Avoid foods that force us to make sudden movements in the jaw, especially during the first week after treatment.
  • The patient should not apply any type of makeup to the area for the first 24 hours.
  • Try to sleep on your back for the first few days, to avoid bumps or scratches that can irritate the skin.
  • The patient should avoid exaggerated gestures when speaking and sudden movements that occur when yawning, sneezing, coughing, laughing… This during the first days after treatment.
  • If necessary, anti-inflammatory ointments can be used in the affected area, especially if small bruises occur.
  • If possible, perform lymphatic drainage.
  • Apply non-direct cold during the first hours after the procedure, to avoid irritation or inflammation on the treated skin.
